          EDGELL RICKWORD was born in Colchester, Essex, on 22 October, He joined the Artists Rifles in , and saw active service as an officer with the Royal Berkshire Regiment.

          At this period he met Richard Hughes and Edgell Rickword, amongst others.

        1. At the beginning of the twentieth century the publishing of literature was characterised by widening readerships and falling retail prices.
