Characterised by their dramatic, almost theatrical lighting, Caravaggio's paintings were controversial, popular, and hugely influential on succeeding generations of painters all over Europe.

          Born Michelangelo Merisi, Caravaggio is the name of the artist's home town in Lombardy in northern Italy.
